Ambrose Bierce was an American writer, journalist, and satirist. He was born in Meigs County, Ohio, on June 24, 1842. He was the tenth of thirteen children born to Marcus Aurelius and Laura Sherwood Bierce. Bierce attended the Kentucky Military Institute and the University of Cincinnati, but he did not graduate from either. He enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War and served as a topographical engineer. After the war, he worked as a journalist and editor for various newspapers in the Midwest. In 1872, Bierce moved to San Francisco, where he wrote for the San Francisco News Letter and the Wasp. He also wrote for the San Francisco Examiner and the Argonaut. In 1887, he published his first book, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians. Bierce was known for his dark, cynical writing style. He wrote short stories, essays, and poetry, and he was a master of the horror genre. He was also a master of satire, and his work often featured biting social commentary. Bierce's most famous work is The Devil's Dictionary, a collection of satirical definitions of words and phrases. He also wrote a series of stories about the Civil War, which were collected in a book called The Civil War in the United States. Bierce disappeared in 1914 while traveling in Mexico. His fate remains a mystery. He was declared legally dead in 1924.

He was one of the best known journalists of the the last quarter of the 19th century. While working for William Randolph Hearst's "San Francisco Examiner", Bierce doggedly campaigned to bring down Collis Huntington, owner and president of the Southern Pacific Railroad. He won the battle in the US Senate and Huntington was forced to break up his railroad conglomerate. Bierce later spoke out vehemently against the Spanish-American War, though his boss, Hearst, is credited as one of the war's principal agitators.
He was a writer, known for The Twilight Zone (1959), An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (2005) and Il fascino dell'insolito (1980). He was married to Mary Ellen "Mollie" Day.
